Post subject: BSOD 0x1E on boot (no safe mode either)
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win2000>advanced_server, others (more info?)

UPS may have failed to shutdown computer cleanly last Saturday night.

OS Windows 2000 Advanced Server, SP4, fully patched.
Machine has run several years without issue. No software / hardware added.

Disabled unnecessary services, pcAnywhere (and its drivers), CA eTrust AV.

Computer boots through "Starting Windows", flashes the Windows 2000 screen
and immediately shows BSOD:
*** STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC00000005,0x804B7AD7,0x00000000,0x00000004)
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

*** ADDRESS 804B7AD7 base at 80400000, DateStamp 45ec3c8f - ntoskrnl.exe

Disk checked for errors - clean. Full Virus & Malware scans clean.

Help appreciated.

Hi:
There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of STOP: 0x0000001E -
0xC00000005 troubleshooting articles "out there''..
But, assuming several things: 1: you have yet to open the chassis .. aka
moved / loosened cables wires etc. 2: did not recently install updates / new
software [ without a reboot ] 3: assumed that safemode boot is possible [
since you said disabled PCAW and CA A/V ].

You might try the following to isolate the issue [ aka divide and conquer].

1a: Assuming SAFE Mode boot is available, check to see if there was an
update from Windows Update or you4 CA A/V within 24hrs. of your Stop
Errors ]. If so uninstall the updates.

1b: Look at your event logs, just prior to and after the STOP errors
started, it may hint at what happened .
1c: Try MEMTEST from Microsoft Online crash analysis [
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp ]

2: physically remove any / all external hardware except a directly connected
keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Verify the ability to boot in "normal" mode
[ noting the errors not related to the removed external hardware
connections.]

3: if you still get the STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC00000005,0x??????? ) codes;
then try opening the server chassis, and disconnect all power and data
cables from all hardware devices except the OS drive ~hoping that the OS is
not installed on a RAID array~ .. Verify the ability to boot in "normal"
mode [ noting the errors not related to the removed external hardware
connections.]

4: Assuming, that "Normal" boot succeeds, then you have a place to start
identifying a hardware / driver issue causing the STOP: error..

5: Failing this, you might need to physically remove any plug-in cards not
ABSOLUTELY necessary for the machine to boot. Verify the ability to boot in
"normal" mode.

6: Failing this, start looking at fans, PSU, etc.

These steps are suggested first, since there was no indications listed that
makes me think your issue is anything other that a percieved hardware /
driver fault.
