Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your HijackThis log
to an appropriate forum for review by an expert, Lars-Erik.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

other appropriate forums for expert analysis, not here.**

Normally it should not mess up any settings and installed stuff,
more here:

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

Be sure to use an OS CD that includes SP2 (slipstreamed in).

If SP2 is not included in your OS CD, I suggest you slipstream
SP2 into your OS CD.

Use AutoStreamer or nLite to make the process pretty easy.

AutoStreamer:

Create a Slip Stream version of Windows XP

nLite:

Universal Windows Slipstreaming and Bootable CD Guide

That worked for all of them, BUT none of the fixes there helped
either. Even tried adding the server with the ActiveX to the Trusted
Zone (then the Information Bar should not appear at all, right) but
the message still says that "Could not install ActiveX" Sad

And no matter what I do (reregistering DLLs, checking registry
settings, changing security setting, group settings etc) I still can't
get that Information Bar to show when an ActiveX is to be downloaded
(but since it is not downloaded with zone=Trusted I guess the
Information bar is not the problem - ActiveX is blocked otherwhere)

On tip mentioned a "XP repair install" but how big a mess-up is that
(will much of my system look, setup etc by reset to standard XP)?

And how do I initiate a repair install...

Added "microsoft.public.windowsupdate" to the list, since I have
noticed that most people get into this error when using Windows Update
(because they then can't install and run MS own update ActiveX Smile

Didn't work :-/ Tried doing that at work and the installation then
crashes (isn't it possible to slip-stream with a SelectCD as source).
tried several tools for slip streaming (including your choice).

But are you saying "repair install" will remove SP2 (that's good as I
need to do that to reinstall IE6 - so MS Norway says - and I haven't
been able to do that as the SP2 uninstall information is missing)?

Reguallery use both Spybot S&D, AdAware, Microsoft Anti-Spyware and
XsoftSpy. No one reports anything strange. What should I look for?

Did you tried it with having the AV scanner uninstalled - at least
for test purposes?

The same here: try uninstalling WebWasher temporary.

What happends on a computer with dual-boot (Win98se on first
partition, WinXP on 2nd). Will XP mess-up the MBR so that the dual
boot will be destroyed, or will it only touch the partition with XP.
Or must I do things (disable the Win98 partation while repairing)

Yep, and the one PC doesn't have the same AV (and the third PC that
works OK does have the same AV with same setting as the 2nd Smile

Yep, on both PCs not working (3rd working PC also has WebWasher).

What values should be here (found no differences from the working PC)
Also I tried reinstalling SP2. That didn't help either.

Haven't done a "repair install" yet. Need to find out what to do with
my dual-boot first (so XP setup doesn't mess up my Win98 partition).
