Post subject: usb hub drivers not installed Add to elertz Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>hardware (more info?)
Hi,
I have Toshiba A15 S157. I lost the recovery disk but bought a xp home
disk. I installed sp home without complications. Then went to Toshiba website
and downloaded and installed all the drivers and downloads. When i look at
the devices, I see that only one of the usb hub drivers installed and teh
other one says drivers not installed. I tried to reinstall the downloads from
Toshiba and searched the XP disk for the correct driver with no avale. The
ports work but it still shows the device with an exclamation point. Toshiba
charges for their tech support so any help would be greatly appreciated. I
have done all the updates from Microsoft and am lost now.
Thanks,
John

In your response, obviously you are not a Microsoft "professional". When you
are notified that a device has the drivers not installed or is faulty, one
should trouble shoot it to make sure no problems down the road occur. After
my post I looked a little further into the news groups and used the
information found. Which is, after downloading and installing windows
updates, to uninstall problem device and restart. I tried this prior to the
post but didn't have the updates. After updates and the uninstall and the
restart the device drivers where all loaded without problem and I have no
further issues.
So in short, thanks for your post and I hope that the information I have
just posted will help another user down the road as oppposed to your "no
help" response.

You are right. I am not a Microsoft professional. I'm a real professional.
My response was based on the wise saying, "If it ain't broke don't fix it".
Your USB ports were working, so why try and fix a minor issue that isn't
causing any diffiulties?

Thanks for the input. My reasoning is that even though the issue didn't casue
a problem currently, It may invoke an issue down the road when my mother
takes her laptop back to Georgia and has to send it back to me in California
when and if it does crash from the driver error. It is called preventive
repair. The issue has been resolved and thanks again.

That fear is valid for Windows in general. There is always the risk that
something you install today can compromise something that you have installed
in the past or something that you are going to install in the future.
I am still aware of several HP printers that once you have installed them
prevent the installation of the drivers for several Philips products.

USB Hubs all use the default drivers that Microsoft provides built
into XP. In order to get the USB ports to respond correctly, you
need / should always install the proper motherboard chipset drivers
and make sure the PC's BIOS / CMOS has the USB ports option turned on
correctly.
Locate the laptop's chipset drivers off the Toshiba's web site.
If they do not have one, you might be able to use the drivers provided
by one of the various motherboard chipset driver manufacturers.
