so aparently something happened that completely destroyed the sound on my
computer. the only audio i ever hear is a really loud beep every once in a
while, like when i close a document w/o saving. i have an acer aspire 3620
laptop, and under "sounds and audio devices" in control pannel it says that
there is "no audio device."
side-note: since this has happened, i've been prompted to download software
for the new hardware "multimedia audio controller." the confusing thing is i
haven't added any new hardware...

Go to the manufacturer's web page - download the drivers for your sound
device - install them.
Listen to sound.

I've been to the manufacturer's web page, unfortunatly the driver that was
available is not supported by XP.

You are responding to a thread that is over two years old! In the
future, you should simply begin a new thread.
Your post is just one sentence long and doesn't contain much
information. Why don't you start again, stating what your problem is. Be
sure to also include the make and model of your PC.

Got the same problem. Had to reload Windows to fix another problem.
Suddenly no Sound! Drivers are all loaded. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Sometimes, it seems when XP updates to SP3, the on-board sound card
driver gets "disabled." Usually a driver reinstall might give back
the sound.
