*Before* you even bother with the download/installation of SP3,
determine if the system can be Validated as Genuine. Use Internet
Explorer and go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/
then, here:
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/default.aspx?displaylang=en&PartnerID=4

Next, determine which Service Pack level the system is now at by going
to Start > Run > type in winver
Click OK or press Enter

If it's SP1 or SP1a, then skip SP2 and obtain SP3 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76...1f-be08
After the download completes, please read these articles before appyling
SP3:
Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717/

Windows XP SP3 - Read all prerequisites for a successful installation
http://msmvps.com/blogs/harrywaldron/archive/2008/05/08/windows-xp-sp3...ad-all-

IF SP3 still fails to install properly, you can use the log files
described here to troubleshoot the installation:

Cannot install Service Pack 2[3]
http://winhlp.com/node/125#Cannot_install_Service_Pack_2
or, get free support from MS:

http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&prid=11273&gprid=522131

" Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3). This support for SP3 is
valid until April 14, 2009. For more information about this policy,
visit the Windows XP Support Lifecycle page located at
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3223. Availability of chat or
e-mail support differs depending on your geographic location. For
customers residing in North America or Canada, chat and e-mail support
is available.

Some issues may require more advanced support for which there is a charge. "

Check the e-mail header. I really don't think it is John.
