Post subject: How to run GD+ Detection Tool ? Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>security_admin (more info?)
Posted on this separately but thought a new post may be appropriate for these
questions... Thanks for any additional help on this as I'm trying to get it
right
Status:
XP Pro Svc Pk 2 here on few week old Toshiba Laptop w/Auto Updates ON
- Recently a balloon popped-up alerting me of new update so I clicked it
- and apparently installed the GDI+ Detection Tool as...
- "Review your update history" at...
http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
tells me I have GDI+ Detection installed.
Questions:
1 - Now how do I run the tool? Where is it on my PC?
(The "Notes" section at... http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=873374
are very confusing... in the 2nd paragraph it tells me... "If you download
the tool from the Windows Update Web site, you can run the tool only one
time."
Then it tells me... "To run the tool again, you must download the tool from
the Microsoft Download Center." Huh?!!)
2 - Must I re-download the Tool to run it?
3 - Later on the same page it tells me to go to the location where the GDI+
Detection Tool was saved to run it...
Anyone know where the Auto Update may have saved it?
(a search of C: for fileswith GDI in their name reveals many files but only
one App... GDI.exe... and I don't think that is it...)
4 - Finally... Since this looks for the Stack Overflow problem in "other
apps" must I run this after installing each piece of new software from now
on???
I guess I lost my opportunity to do this properly somewhere along the way
and thanks to anyone who pitches in to help.

If you received it as an update, it's not saved anywhere on your
computer but should be installed. Have you checked in Program Files for
it? Perhaps allyou need to do is make a shortcut to the main executable
there to run it separately. IF you have to run it separately.
To get the actual file you'd have to go go MS and specifically download
(not RUN) the file and save it to your hard drive.

- Or answer any of my original quetions.
Hopefully someone will spend a few minutes and help me with this and not
just point me to web pages that often don't seem to really help...
Thanks for any help.

You can't figure out how to download and run?
1) How to you run the tool?
Download it. Run the file.
2) Must you re-download the tool?
Windows Update will decide when it wants to download and install the
tool (where install simply runs it). It is likely that it will be ran
by WU only once during the lifespan of the current instance of Windows
against which you are testing for updates. You can download it and run
whenever you feel like it. Must you download before running it? Only
if you want to ensure you have the latest version of it (i.e., you don't
want to use the copy that you previously downloaded).
3) Where to find it after the download?
When you do the download yourself, it is wherever YOU said to store the
file.
4) Must you run this after installing each piece of new software?
Take a look at the list of products that it checks. Are you really
installing those products (i.e., you uninstalled them and then
reinstalled them)?
Did you go read the Overview KB article for which there was a link in
the supplied download article?
