How to turn off a XP computer without a mouse?

VERY simply...

1). Press the WinKey to bring up the Start Menu.

2). Use the "up" cursor key to select the shutdown option (first on the list from the
bottom of the Start Menu).

3). Press ENTER to select Shutdown to bring up the shutdown options dialog box (the
one that fades out the rest of the desktop).

4). Use the "Tab" key to cycle the "focus "through the three option buttons (Stand
By, Turn Off, Restart).

By pressing the "Tab" button, you will see a subtle "highlight" cycle through the
buttons on the Shutdown Options dialog - whichever button the highlight is on will be
the one activated when you hit the ENTER key.

5). Hit ENTER when the highlight is on the selection you want.



ALTERNATIVELY:

Open the "Run box" on the Start Menu (WinKey+R) or a Command Prompt and type in :

Shutdown /s /t 0

(the "0" here is a ZERO)

....and press [ok] or hit ENTER

(where "Win" means the Windows key).

As Dr.HiginoG.Paula has said, Ctrl and Esc together do the same as the
Windows key (i. e. same as clicking on Start if you had a working
mouse), but unless your Win key is broken or you have a _very_ old
keyboard, you won't need that.

The similar sequence on Windows 9x is

In both cases, this will usually achieve the desired result. Sometimes
something that is running will pop up a question box, such as do you
want to save; pressing space will activate whichever button (such as the
"OK" one) has the dotted line round it, and tab will move the dotted
line to the other button(s).

It's very worthwhile learning the keyboard options - not only in case
the mouse sulks, but they're often faster anyway - the most extreme case
is where you're filling in a form with lots of boxes, so your hands are
on the keyboard anyway: type text, press tab, type more text, use
up/down arrows if there are any drop-down boxes, press enter when
finished. I find it quite painful to watch some people type into one
box, move their hand to the mouse to get to the next box, back to the
keyboard to type some more, mouse again, type again, and finally mouse
to get to OK/Enter/Submit.

I have to admit that just "hit the win key, then the u key, then u again" is
brilliant, and much easier than the way I explained.

However, in my defence of the method I outlined, if you learnt it, then you would be
able to do almost anything using the keyboard, by a combination of the cursor (arrow)
keys and the tab key...
