Sony is not alone. Other manufacturers are only supporting Vista on
_certain_ computer models, particularly laptops. This was also the case in
the change from win95/98 to XP.

I don't see it a ludicrous. I see it as a buisness decision based on a
cost/benefits analysis.

It's something one needs to research before making an OS change. Will
legacy software / hardware work? How do I handle it if it doesn't? Is the
new computer compatible with the legacy OS?

Post subject: Solution to Sony VAIO - Windows XP Drivers [Login to view extended thread Info.]

I have just had this exact issue:

Situation: CEO purchased Sony VAIO VGN-TX57GN laptop with Vista pre-installed. We put Windows XP on and of course Sony do not provide all or some of the drivers for XP depending on which Sony sites you visit. The laptop also did not come with any Driver disc.

Solution: The first step is to understand that Sony is only a brand and underneath every brand is pretty much a well built Intel Chipset or some other chipset manufacture that Sony don't want you to know about.

1) Goto Intel website and download this utility to find out what chipset you actually have got (this is providing that the VAIO laptop is an Intel Chipset (most of them are):

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldId=116...amp;lan

Download the Chipset Identification Utility and run it on your VAIO - (I had to have another computer to download the drivers and a USB key to transfer them to the VAIO laptop as I had 8 devices which couldn't be found in device manager including the Ethernet Adapter so no Internet on the VAIO)

This great utility will let you know what your chipset is. For me it was the Intel 945GSM Chipset.

Once you know your chipset goto:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx

and select 'Chipsets' from the top left hand menu, then 'Laptop Chipsets' then select your chipset for the VAIO laptop that came up from the chipset identification utility. So for me its the 945 Express Family Chipset.

Next choose your OS: mine is XP Professional

In here you will get a list of some drivers and utilitys not all.

In my case I downloaded an INF Update utility but that still didn't sort the network card out and other stuff but you still need it to sort things out.

Next from the main Intel download site: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/default.aspx

and select 'Graphics' from the top left hand menu, then 'Laptop Graphics Controllers' then select your chipset for the VAIO laptop that came up from the chipset identification utility. So for me its the 945 GM Express Family Chipset.

Choose your OS: XP Pro (for me)

And download the latest version of Intel Graphics Media Accelerator! and boom your graphics will come after a reboot.

Once again from the main Intel Download site, you can also browse to other drivers that you may require, just have a good sniff round the site because just remember that under that Sony is a simple Intel Chipset Wink

General Network drivers for all Intel Chipset boards that got me going just fine:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldId=427...mp;lang

The Audio drivers for the VAIO that I eventually found used Intel High Definition Audio and so just a simple AC'97 High Deff Audio driver sorted this out fine:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PN...14&

With this particular VAIO came also a fingerprint scanner for extra security. Goto here to download the latest drivers for XP which worked a treat like all the drivers above - this software is called: "Protector Suite" the link is halfway down the following page:

http://www.drtweeker.com/2007/05/27/sony-vaio-fingerprint-readers-firefox-20

Wireless drivers for the VAIO I foud here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=N&DwnldId=130...amp;lan

As you can see most of the drivers are available on the Intel website because it is their chipset.

I just can't, for the life of me, understand why sony would not provide this information to its users, who after all, are simply asking for HELP and they are just bouncing those cries with a deaf ear.

So hope this has helped in some way or another - remember people that Google is your friend and there is always a way. Still can't believe how long it took me to find out all this so no way on earth do I want another fellow human to go through all that again! Razz hehe

Chur!
Mat.

Note: After installing the High Definition Audio drivers the modem driver will be the next file you will need to install...this was prob the hardest one to find as I had no clue as to what modem type Intel used on their chipset and this varies aswell. For me, eventually I found that it was the conexant modem driver which can be found here and this has since been working fine:

http://www.conexant.com/support/md_driverdownload.jsp

Download the file: HSFhda_WinXP.zip

Hi all,

Seems like I am not alone Sad

I bought a Sony VAIO VGN-FZ104E Laptop which came with Vista. I hate Vista and so I (with great difficulty and by spending extra $150) got XP installed. The problem now ofcourse is finding the drivers. So far the USB ports are working but no sound, the AV Mode button is not working, can't find the driver for the modem, and so on....

I will be really very grateful if someone can help me find the drivers for my Laptop. Also, how can I make my XP CD recognize the SATA drive (when I boot with the XP CD). This is where that guy charged me $150 but though I don;t know the details, but he certainly did not install any SATA drivers because when I try to boot with Norton Ghost or Acronis boot disk, they too do not find the SATA harddisk.

Once again, can someone please help. To start with How do I get the souns drivers up and running and from where do I download KB835221, and KB888111? How do I get the AV Mode and the S button to work? How do I get the Modem drivers and the drivers for the card readers Crying or Very sad

Many many advance thanks.

Hi,

No need to worry. You're in good hands and on one of the best forums Smile

Send me your email via PM and I'll try to either email the sound drivers.

Chow.
