I have a user who claims he has changed nothing, but his system has taken to
having a wee rest at startup.

It boots to the login screen fine (XP Pro connected to a 2003 Server
network), but once you enter the login details it brings up the desktop
without any icons, and just sits there with no disc activity for about 2
minutes, then goes on to finishing the boot up.

Has anybody encountered this before? If so is there a fix? I have already
checked for viruses etc..

Q318011 - Error Message Windows Cannot Load Your Profile Because It May Be
Corrupted: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q318011

They should probably try to create a new profile and copy the old data to
it.

What errors appear in Event Viewer?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last boot in
normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate
which also appear in a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

The only error is in the Application section. It is:

Event Type: Error

Time: 12:43:24
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: LT140
Description:

(The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. ).
Group Policy processing aborted.

I had this problem, but not on a network. I found two extra short cuts to
"search desktop" in "all users" programs and startup. They all checked
"outlook express" for msgs. I was getting a msg "Outlook Express can
compract..." each time I opened one of my accounts. I don't use OE, so I
should not have had the message.
Once I deleted the two short cuts, msg went away and I could startup my
computer without having to turn it off and on a few times to get through to
the system (pull plug). The relates to "Windows Search Desktop 4.0"

Thanks
