I have a hard drive of 40 GB but it is using less than half. I previously
used it for another operating system but now I want it all for Windows XP.
This screenshot may help:

Use WinXP's native disk manager to delete the "New Volume" partition,
and then use a 3rd party partitioning utility to resize your C: (System
Volume) to take up the now unallocated space.

I do not know how to use that program. I am willing to reinstall Windows XP
so long as it uses all of my hard drive.

Go buy Partition Magic and use it to merge partitions.

No need to reinstall. Download the BootIt NG setup file. You can create a bootable CD or floppy (for CD you'll need to use CD burning software to burn the ISO file to disc). Boot with the floppy or CD and when the BootIt installation starts click Cancel. You'll automatically be taken to Maintenance mode. Choose Partition work and you can delete the offending partition and resize the partition with XP installed. Couldn't be easier.

Looks perfectly OK to me - you have three partitions: one that you use for
the OS, one called New Volume and one for Recovery. What's wrong with that?

Yes, but I want Windows XP to use the new volume too.

So, you're saying you only want one partition, the C: drive like you
always have had? If so, format the disk and install XP, preferably in
NTFS, not FAT32.
All times are: Eastern Time (US & Canada) (change)
