Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) is now available from www.microsoft.com.
(Security & Updates) (Microsoft Update) (Express)
I haven't installed SP3 as I don't want problems. Am I being over cautious?
Does anyone have any bad experiences with SP3?

From the overview or release notes for SP-3, what of SP-3 must you have?

Quite a few people have had "problems" if you read this and other
groups, but most of them are usually due to self-made problems in
addition to a couple of oddities MS created if you have XP Gold or a
couple other odd apps.
If you are currently up to date with XP2 and the following hot fixes,
you're probably fine and there is no rush to install SP3.
Where SP3 will be valuable is if/when you have to do a manual
reinstall of your system. Where you would have needed SP2 and the
hundred or so following hot fixes, today you just need SP3.
It does add a couple new things and fixes a couple things I guess,
from what I read, but if they've never bothered you, no big deal.
I've downloaded SP3 and plan to install it, but I'm going to wait for a
time when I'm not busy since it'll take my machine out of commision for
a couple hours. If you go to the update site, there are articles there
on what to do before you install SP3, etc., just like there was for SP2.
And for most people the list is simpler than it was for SP2. You really
need to read that part first; the URLs have been posted many times in
this group; look for them.

I am one of these fools who (often) rush in where angels fear to
tread.
I had just done a frewsh install of Windows XP SP2, and was faced with
having to install almost a hundred or so updates.
Just then noticed SP3 vwas available, which included all these
updates.
So, what the heck: Go for it! - I did.
So far, I havent noticed any adverse effects.
The only (not related, I nthink) problem I now have to fix is that on
start-up I have to click on my profile name since Bill Gates saw fit
to install another profile on my computer (ASP.NEY Machine A) which
I understand has something to do with Miccrosoft.NET Framework 1.1
It was so nice that my computer would just boot up to the desk-top
without my input being required halfway.
Oh, well . . . . . that's for another day.
Cheers!

The only difficulty I had was gaining access to the download site, I figured
half of North America was trying at the same time I was. When the download
began something interrupted it and I had to start all over. Finally, after
an hour or so I got everything, was notified that I needed to install some
other security updates. Running the XP SP3 now, no troubles.
Incidentally, for those not familiar with Belarc Advisor I recommend it
strongly to see what your system is really like and what it may need. (I
have no connection with Belarc, but I wouldn't be without it.)

I've had good experiences with it actually, but the home machine I've put it
on as part of a fresh install had to be rebuilt anyway, and I'm being paid
to test things like that at work *shrugs*. I think it's a good update and
I'd suggest applying it to any new builds you do from now on but as for
updating a system that's currently working fine, why rush? I'm a great
believer in not borrowing trouble if you don't have to.

Totally agree about Belarc - a wealth of information about your system
including all installed software and their license numbers.
