Dear Friends:
I had a corruption of XP files yesterday, wouldn't boot, so after having a
pro shop clean the laptop's contacts I performed a REPAIR of XP , booting
with the original XP cd. The Firewall icon in the bottom toolbar
disappeared, so I investigated. I received a message: "Unidentified problem,
can't display firewall settings."
That's not acceptable for obvious reasons.
Can anyone please tell me how to restore that Firewall icon and activity? I
have not yet found a LIVE Microsoft or XP tech connection to deal with this
like there is for AOL support and probably others. Does one exist? Thanks!

First of all, my suggestion to you is, I would reformat my harddrive. i know
that sounds like a pain, and you will loose everyt5hing that you have
installed on your drive, but this is what I have done, to save face. Second,
when you reformat, afterwards, you should use norton internet security 2006.
You can get it at the norton site, or places like best buy, circut city, etc.
Let me know if this helps.

Thanks for the "reformat" suggestion. Been there a few years ago, done that.
I know what that does...
I was working on the problem when you wrote: after discovering that the
entire Security Center was missing I checked the SOftware files. All the
Service Updates including Service Pack 2 were erased. That, I believe, is the
issue, so I am rebuilding.

After a repair install you need to reinstall the service pack first and then
all security updates. --- Steve

Thanks, Steve. I tried to do that but the process at microsoft.com leads to
downloading a bunch of updates along with SP2 and of course, that didn't
work, so I'm going to try again to isolate and Download SP2 first as you have
suggested.

Actually, installing the service pack 2 installs all(well at least most) the
security updates for you
