It looks like you've already explored this extensively, but here are
hopefully some things you haven't seen:

Kelly's tweak raises the 5000 folder limit to 8000.. I doubt that will
help if you just increased it to 5000 and it was working just before
that, though.

"If you check "remember each folder's view setting", every time you open
a folder who's settings weren't previously set, you'll get the default
setting: large icons.

Instead, switch the view to your liking, deactivate the "remember"
option, press the "Like Current Folder" button and apply. This will set
your preferred view setting system wide. "
