You may want to try this free utility to fix the Windows Installer (and other issues with Windows/IE):

I was finally able to get the updated Windows installer installed on my computer, but, now my download speed from the newsgroups is 75% SLOWER !!!
What did Windows change or close or screw up on me ???
Any ideas at all where I should start ?
I've checked and tried various settings on my network connection, with no change in speed....
THis is TERRIBLE. I'll have to wipe the hdd if I can't fix this, to go from 3 hour downloads to TWENTY HOUR DOWNLOAD times is just so unacceptable...
Please, any help would be greatly appreciated...

THANK GOD for free utilities !!!
I don't know what Windows changed on me, but it affected my whole network. I ran across TCP Optimizer (http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php), ran it and applied the recommended settings to optimize my connection, and THANKFULLY, all is restored to normal(and a bit faster, actually....).
Is there any way for me to find what Windows changed so I can fix it again when it inevitably happens again at a future time with another of Windows fixes ?
