Post subject: Windows Explorer closes when I click on START button

The message "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" appears the instant I click on the Start button. Otherwise, all programs and functions seem to operate normally.
This began to happen for no apparent reason--I didn't do any recent updates or installations. Would be grateful for advice.

Running Win XP Home, SP2.
