I am trying to use my Windows Disk Defrag utility proram. Whilst the
application is there for me to open up, I cannot get the "Analyse" and
"Defragment" buttons to work and defrag the machine. Please can someone
advise how to get the buttons working.

Is the DCOM Server Process Launcher service running?

See:

Ian

What error message appears when you try to analyse or is there just no
response?

Does the command line alternative work?

Description of the New Command Line Defrag.exe Included with Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283080/en-us

Does chkdsk work?

Hope this helps.

Hi Ramesh
Thanks for your post.
Not sure what the DCOM Server Process Launcher service is but using the
service.msc command, it shows in the list as "Automatic" so assume it is
running. I believe this problem has come about because I loaded a third
party defrag utility program and then uninstalled it. I've followed the
instruction you gave below and the problem still exists. Do you have any
other thoughts - Many thanks

Hi Gerry
Thanks for your response.

No error message appears at all. The buttons will depress but nothing
happens. Not sure what you mean by command line alternative. If you can
explain I will let you know.

Chkdsk is working. Says to use chkdsk /f to fix file issues but then says
cannot do it as the volume is being used by another process. Not sure what
this means. Have set it to run the next time the PC restarts.

Can you explain what you mean by "New Command Line Defrag.exe". Is this an
option to possibly correct my problem.

Thanks again

Well, you can try to Repair the Defrag by doing the following:
Start In Safe Mode and Defrag your system.
Here some info on how to repair Defrag if it damaged:
Open a run command and register these DLLs:
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 dfrgui.dll
regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll

= Open Windows Explorer and locate this path;
C:\Windows\inf =in the right Pane/Window select dfrg.inf and right click on
it and select install

Repair Disk Defragmenter in Windows 2000/XP

And also make sure the machine free from malware and viruses by running a
thorough scan with an up2date security software and anti-malware.
Scan for malware from here:
SuperAntispyware - Free

Ian

Select Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and right
click on DCOM Server Process Launcher and select Properties.

The Service Status appears under the StartUp type o the General tab.

With a Start Up type of Automatic the Service should have started but to
say it starts Automatically is not evidence that it has started.

Ian

Have you been using a third party disk utility or third party
defragmenter?

With Windows XP two defragmenters are provided. The command line
defragmenter can be run by selecting Start, Run type "cmd" without
quotes and click on OK. Type "defrag c: -f" without qotes and depess the
ENTER key. When th process has completed type "exit" without quotes and
depess the ENTER key to return to Windows. The command line defragmenter
is alternative way to defragment. Read KB Article 283080 for switches,
which be used with the defrag command.
