Post subject: Weird problem with DVDROM reading speed Add to elertz Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>hardware (more info?)
Hello Group,
I don't know what happened recently, but my DVD reading speed dropped to
1.6mb/s rate, under XP32.
If I recall well, this problem did not manifest until last week!
Since I also have Vista 64 installed, I tried and the speed is as supposed
to be.
Both my DVD reader and DVD writers are on IDE1, while my harddrive is SATA.
Also, the DVD writter under XP is writing at almost 2x, while on Vista it is
fast and behaves normal.
I don't remember what I installed and what caused the problem, but it looks
like XP became misconfigured.
Any ideas on how to reset the drives' speed?
p.s: I also checked if there are any upper or lower filters on the cdrom
devices, but none exist.

It sounds as though your drive is in PIO mode instead of DMA mode. MVP
Hans-Georg Michna has the explanation and an easy fix here:

Hi Malke,
Your proposition makes perfect sense, and was actually the problem!
That vbs script works in XP as well.
Now I know why it switched to PIO: Last week I was copying a scratched
CD and had lots of read errors and retries...so per the article,
windows must have switched to PIO and remained so.
Thanks!
Elias

I'm very glad that sorted it for you. Thanks for taking the time to let me
know.
