Post subject: Unsupported Device - what is it? Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>hardware (more info?)
Hi,
I have an older PC (Dell Dimension 9100) that originally came with Windows
Millenium Edition, but had later been upgraded to Windows XP Home. This PC
had been riddled with viruses so I reformated the hard drive and reinstalled
Windows XP. Everything went pretty well - the installation automatically
found drivers for all the major devices as far as I can tell.
If I go into Device Manager, there is one device listed as "Unsupported
Device" in the "Other Devices" category. If I go to the "Details" tab, the
"Device Instance ID" is listed as "ACPI/MGMT180/2&DABA3FF&0". I have no idea
what this device is and Windows Update is not able to find a driver for it.
Can anyone suggest a way I might be able to find out what this device is and
possibly find a driver for it?
If not, can anyone tell me how I can prevent this device from appearing in
"Device Manager"?

Go to Dell's web site.
Support area.
Downloads.
Enter the service tag (best way) or at least the model of the computer.
Tell it what OS you are running.
If there is a driver for that component for the OS you are running - it will
be there.
My suggestion of ryou is to install the Chipset driver, the video card
driver, the sound card driver, the network driver, the communications
dribver (if it has a dial-up modem) and so on - until you find the right
one.

Hi Shenan,
Thanks for your response. I actually did go to the dell website and enter
the service tag. The only problem is that this system was purchased in
September 2001 and it came with Windows Millenium. Dell only lists drivers
for it up to Windows 2000. Now that I have loaded Windows XP and the
installation found drivers for almost everything, would you still recommend
that I try loading Windows 2000 drivers until I find one for the "Unsupported
Device"?

You could try - however what you have found out is that the hardware in the
machine is not supported in Windows XP (most likely) and you may never find
the driver you need to make this unknown device work for Windows XP.
(That is the hardware manufacturer's perogative - nothing to do with the OS
other than it existing.)

Hi Shenan,
The PC seems to be working fine, so I am not going to worry about finding a
driver for this unknown device.
Do you know if there is a way that I can prevent it from showing up in
Device Manager? It curently appears with a yellow question mark next to it.
I see that Device Manager gives me the option to disable it or uninstall it,
but I would really like to not see it at all as if it never existed and also
to prevent it from being re-detected every time the PC is restarted.
Any advice you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

if your machine is working OK, I would not give it a second thought

Disabled is your only viable choice. In that state it should not ask you
for a driver for it. You cannot 'make it disappear' because - well - it
physically is there and you cannot make Windows XP ignore it anymore than it
would if you disabled it.
