Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>hardware (more info?)

What causes time and date errors (reverts back 5 years) after all compute
shut downs? Dell Dimension 8300>Windows XP SP3.

Most likely the CMOS battery on your motherboard has expired and the BIOS is
reverting to its default settings.
