Software Distribution Service 3.0

I have XP Professiona with Service pack 3
Yes i can manually download update . I had it on Auto but I disabled it to
prevent the Software Distribution 3.0 from getting downloaded and installed
but for some reason this is the only download that goes through but the rest
ask me if I want to install them.

By any chance did you just (1) do a clean install of WinXP and then (2)
install SP3 (manually or via Automatic Updates or Windows Update)?

"Software Distribution Service 3.0" isn't really an update, per se, but it
needs to be installed & running in order to install any/all updates (via
Windows Update or Automatic Updates).

NB: Do not confuse "WGA Notification" (an ActiveX Control that must be
installed in order to use Windows Update website...but not Automatic
Updates) with the "WGA Notifications" tool (KB905474).

Which takes us back to, "Can you update manually [and successfully] via
Windows Update (website)?" If you choose not to do so, I'm afraid you'll
have to enable Automatic Updates so that you can install any updates the

Thanks for your reply. My computer was running fine and the Auto Update
was on and all updates were installed until several weeks ago suddenly I
could not get online . Called Comcast and they told me to check my updates
as there seems to be an issue with Software Distribution 3.0 I could not
see it and after checking my restore point I noticed it there .

I can update manually with no problem but this Software 3.0 installs itself
constantly which does something that causes Internet explorer not to launch
and thus I can not get on line . Every 2 days I have to use the Restore
function to restore my computer to day before to get rid of this Software 3.0
so that I can get on line .

There has to be a flaw in the Softwaare 3.0 for preventing Internet explorer
from launching and or doing some damages to other parts

I am not alone in this matter . I have googled this problem and there
seems to be lots of people affected by it as it cripples computers and some
people are threwing their computers out and going with Apple which is a sad
story for Microsoft . I am also and investor in this company and have
emailed IR .

One thing I do not understand is how can this program download and install
itself when my computer is on Manual download and nothing else is being
installed without me doing it manually .

Tip: Call Comcast Support about connection issues only.

A Restore Point labelled "Software Distribution 3.0" is always created after
installing one or more updates (e.g., Windows Updates; Windows Defender
definitions updates). If you use System Restore to restore your machine to
a previous date, download one or more updates download/install again via
Automatic Updates (and reboot), such a Restore Point will be created.

3. Open C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log <=this file | Go to the end (bottom) of
the log then start scrolling upwards | Do you see repeated listings of the
following entry?...

"Installation successful and restart required for the following update:
Security Update for Windows XP (KB951748)"

Again thanks for reply.

Ever since I bought my computer , 4 years ago, I have not reinstalled Window
XP and all updates were done with Auto update. When I restore my computer
I create restore point myself so that I can go back to it and each day I
create another restore points until this Software 3.0 installs itself and the
same story repeat itself .

My question is with Auto update OFF how can this software download and
install itself .

I use Zonealarm and have used it for the past 4 years with no problem.

And yes, I get a message that downloads have been installed successfully and
your computer needs to be restarted .

The only thing that has changed since I bought my computer is updating IE to
version 7 but that was months ago.

Go to ZoneAlarm and get a fix for this common problem. There is a conflict
with ZoneAlarm and SP3.
Either that or uninstall ZA.
