The old Windows Messenger client can do what you're describing in some networking situations
that Windows Live Messenger has since fixed.

Jonathan, you are the Man! I was having this problem. I had to replce my old
Linksys Router with a new Linksys router and the problem started. With your
advice, I installed the Windows Live Messenger and it works great. No more
signing off and back on.
