Post subject: SP3 caused AMD to reboot... but no Intelppm to revalue Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)
Hi there
I'm writing this on behalf of my dad, who's in Spain. I'm in the UK so I'm
trying to help him over the phone, and it's not easy.
I won't go in to too many details as you all know the problem: an AMD
processor, SP3 installed back in May, no problems initially but for the
past two weeks it's been rebooting (unless you go into Safe Mode and then
restart, and occasionally it will go in normally, but this can take many
attempts).
I know the fix, go to Safe Mode, then Regedit, then HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\System\CurrentControlSet\Services and then go to Intelppm and change the
Start value from 1 to 4.
However, there is no Intelppm, it goes straight from IntelIde to Ip6Fw.
He's checked the other ControlSets. He doesn't have a ControlSet001 for
some reason, he has an 002, 003 and 004 and the Current one. However,
changing just the Current one should be enough.
Intelppm is not in any of them.
Anyone have any further ideas of fixes? Tried rolling back but it was a
while ago, back in mid May. He could try reinstalling XP but I'd be worried
about this, as this is not something I'd like to risk over the phone. Would
also mean having to reinstall all the patches since his initial XP CD (from
ages ago), and he has a sloooow connection.
Thanks.... Any thoughts appreciated. I have had a look on the Net, but
have not yet found anyone else who has had this reboot problem and who also
has not got an Intelppm section within their current Services.
We've also tried typing "sc config intelppm start= disabled" into Run

Usually (99%) if SafeMode boot successful - normal boot not - driver at
fault.
From your post "...an AMD processor,...." - Intelppm is an Intel processor
driver, however I have no lnowledge whether or not it is provided in absence
of an Intel processor.

I kind of doubt that your current problem has anything to do with the SP3
installation in May, or it would have shown up a lot sooner. Particularly the issue
you describe with the Intel driver on AMD systems...it should have caused trouble
right away if it were involved.
Star the computer and on the advanced boot menu (where you can choose from Normal or
Safe mode, and so forth), choose to Disable Automatic Restart (use the arrow keys
to highlight the choice, then press Enter).
Have him report the info near the top where it states what file if any caused it,
and the name of the error.
(In the example I linked, it refers to spcmdcom.sys, and the error name is
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA).
In addition, report ALL the info in the Technical Information section of the error
(shown near the bottom of my example), where it lists a series of numbers for the
Stop Error, and also names the file involved.

Thanks - he's on his holidays at the moment but I'll report back next week!
Let's hope that we'll have better information then.
