Same problem and nVidia driver was the problem!!!!
re-installed a previous driver and now it works fine!

I noticed the same issue a few days ago. I also remember installing the new Nvidia driver around that time to allow my card to handle two monitors the way I wanted. I used the suggestion of removing .NET 3.0 and rebooting first and it worked. I am still using the most current graphics driver as of the time of the post.

FYI. Had the same problem. The notebook did not have .NET 3.0. Also it was using the latest Dell provided ATI RADEON 9600 driver (dated 2005). The driver had recently been updated after applying XP SP3.
Reverted the ATI RADEON driver to the prior version (dated 2003), and Remote Desktop access was restored!
Thanks for the nVidia (video driver) tip. Must have something to do with updating video after XP SP3 application.
