Post subject: Remote Assistance connection could not be established

hello,

I searched the forum but i couldn't find the right answer. i'd be really glad if someone could help me here. I'm using constantly the remote assistance feature on Windows Messenger 5 (latest version), helping friends.
when i try to help my parents threw this program i encounter with this message:

"Remote Assistance connection could not be established because the remote host name could not be resolved. Please try again"

they use d-link ID614+ router, and they also have the latest Windows Messenger version.

I'v noticed there were some suggestion about "forwarding port" to 3389 and also enabling UPnP, but i can't seem to make it work. perhaps i'm doing something wrong..

I already figured that my parents' router ip is 192.168.0.1 and the ip of their computer is 192.168.0.104

Is it possible to give me a step-by-step instruction on what exactly to do? I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks
Tom K.

UPnP is a bad feature, and is a major security risk and should never be enabled unless a program specificly says it needs it. And you should get your parents to faward port 3389 to there computer, it should work.

ok i won't enable the UPnP, but can you please tell me how to forward the port? is it the same as opening ports for emule? i heard somewhere people talking about internal and external ip...
could you be more specific of how doing it (if it's just like opening ports for emule i can manage alone Smile )

thanks

I carn't find the model of router your parents have (You sure it's 614?), if you find the manual for it, it will tell you in there.

yeah it's ID-614+

here is the manual from D-link: http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=1324&question=remote...sistanc

but i can't understand step 6 that says:
"To access the computer from the Internet, you must use the WAN IP address of the router, not the computer. To get the WAN IP address of the router, login as above and click on the Status tab.
NAT does not allow forwarding the same service port to multiple computers"

so i don't get it. on which ip i should open the port? i think i mentioned before that my router IP is 192.168.0.1 and their computer IP is 192.168.0.104 and i'm using their IP when i open the port.

thanks for helping

Tom

The "WAN IP" refers to the routers IP address on the Internet, you need to enter your parents computers LAN IP address in this instance, which is 192.168.0.104 as you said.

so if i understand correctly this is just like a normal port opening, as if i'm opening a port for emule?
this should solve the problem? not messing with internal/external ip?

by the way, thank you so much for the fast reply! Wink
