Post subject: Open With option Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>general (more info?)
I recently added another hard drive to my computer to give me some more
space. I was trying to transfer some stuff over, most of my programs I was
able to reinstall no problem there are a few though where I currently can't
find the CD for it - they're all in storage in a box somewhere, but where
escapes me right now.
So I tried doing a simple cut/paste to transfer a program (an older version
of adobe illustrator) to the new hard drive. It moved over, and I can open
it, use it, save, etc. without problem. However now Illustrator no longer
appears on my "Open With" Menu. And when I try to browse to add it, it won't
add it to the list. If I copy it back over to the original hard drive it
appears on the list again though. So I'm guessing there's a connection
somewhere, in regedit, or somewhere else in Windows XP that's getting broken
when I make the transfer. Can anyone help me with a way to fix this
connection?

Cutting and Pasting the Program Folders from one drive to another is not a
good idea. You are right and there is registry concern with it and modifying
the registry for this purpose will not be so easy.
The better way could be uninstalling the software from Add/Remove Programs
and then reinstall it on another drive. Before that make sure that you have
the CD and it is in good condition or make a dump of the CD to your hard disk
just to make sure that will not create a problem while reinstalling.

There in lies my problem. I bought the program back around 2000-2001 (I
think). I've still got the CD somewhere, but it's long since been placed in
"storage" and I've as of currently been unable to locate it. I was hoping to
find a work around that would save me the time of searching.
I looked in the regedit, but I didn't find any key there in relation to
Illustrator that ties it to it's original location.

Instead of Cutting and Pasting your Program's Folder, I will advise you to
move other stuff from that Hard Drive to new one like Song, Movies and
Pictures. Delete \Windows\Temp files or do a Disk Cleanup, Clear Internet
Temp Files, Programs Dumps or you data files.
