I have my screen saver set to activate after 5 minutes of no activity and
that is working correctly. However, if I'm away from the PC for some time,
when I return the monitor screen is black. After moving the mouse, it takes
forever to display anything.

I went to Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> Power Options. On
the Power Schemes tab, Power Schemes = Always On. Under "Settings for Always
On power scheme",Turn off monitor = Never, Turn off hard disks = Never,
System Standby = Never. On the Hibernate tab, Hibernate is NOT checked.

With all of the above settings, why is the monitor screen going black?

You don't mention the make and model of the monitor.
Does it have power controls?
Does your computer (unknown make and model also) have BIOS power controls?

Richard, I have an LG Flatron 22" Wide Screen LCD monitor. It has a power
on/off switch and 5 option switches in the lower left corner of the bezel.
Since I did not get a user manual with the monitor, I don't know what options
can be selected on those option switches and, since the monitor has otherwise
operated to my satisfaction, I haven't messed with the option switches. BTW,
the monitor is still ON even though the screen is black. My PC is a Dell
Dimension 4550 and I don't know if it has BIOS power controls.

I think I will contact LG and ask them if one, or more, of those option
switches could cause this black screen problem.

Hi Scotty,

Did you reboot the computer and did it recover from a serious crash?

I'm glad you put your name in lower case. If you had signed as The Creator,
I would be thinking that I was in serious trouble! Smile

No, my PC did not have a "serious crash" or any crash at all. So, I didn't
have to reboot. The only major thing I have done lately was to download and
install Service Pack 3 and that was just 2 days ago. The monitor screen
going black has been that way for about 2 or 3 months now.

Yes, and they are the same as the settings in Power Options -> Power Schemes
tab.
