Post subject: Monitor problem Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>hardware (more info?)
XP SP2 - up to date except SP3.
Relisys 19" CRT TE988, monitor just two years old.
GPU -Inno 3D Ge Force 6800GS 256MB DDR3 PCI-E.
I know one or two will roast me for posting here, as I cannot validate any
direct connection between MS and the hardware.
But I have tried to find a suitable forum - no luck - emailed the retailer
and manufacturer - no reply, yet.
A week ago I switched on and immediately noticed a black bar down the right
side with a thin bright white line between that bar and the desktop.
I have used the adjustment options for screen adjustments, together with a
good screen test card, but I cannot move the screen as a whole to the right.
The widening option does move the right hand side, but then the left side
disappears off screen.
Using the move left or right option makes the right side disappear behind
the black bad.
When using the test card, if I reduce it down, one can clearly see the a
'frame' type of outline in which all windows appear. The left side is tight
against the left of the screen frame, but there is this half to three
quarter inch gap on the right.
I have not added/removed any software prior to this event nor changed any
drivers etc.
I am just hoping that somebody has had a previous experience or might be
able to direct me to a place, I have yet to find, where I could get help.
I have considered, after many hours of frustration, to get rid of the
monitor and buy new - I thought I would mention this - some bright spark no
doubt would suggest it

On the Properties of the graphics card (the nVidia Control Panel) there
should be an adjustment feature (in addition to that on the monitor
controls). Have you tried that one?
Are you sure you have the latest nVidia drivers?

This line, "... I switched on and immediately noticed a black bar down the
right side with a thin bright white line between that bar and the desktop
...." leads me to ask...
Is the line there if you do not boot into Windows XP and go into the System
BIOS?
Is the line there if you boot with something like a bootable *nix CD or
Ultimate Boot CD for Windows or some other BartPE type CD -- or even the
Windows XP Safe Mode?
If it does not show it in the BIOS, but does in your Windows (but not in
safe mode or with another boot CD situation) - it may be the video card
driver OR it could be the hardware has gone bad in a very specific way.
If it does show in the BIOS and in other boot situations - chances are great
that it is hardware related.

Hello Cari
Thank you for your interest - no I have had no reason to update drivers for
the GPU - if it aint broke, don't fix - I have had no reason to as I have
added nothing to the computer since it was custom built. There was an
update on offer back in June which I seem to remember was for SP3, which as
yet I have not installed - waiting for the disc. I cannot even blame Black
Tuesday updates for this problem.
I know there is another adjustment within the properties of the card, but I
am damned if I can locate it. I have been all through the nView Desktop
Manager, including nView Properties, several times.
There is another 'properties' under the tab 'desktops' in the Desktop
Manager - the options are stretch, centre etc.
Are you referring to another properties, which I have had another look for
but cannot find.

It will probably be there if you get the latest drivers. Unfortunately I no
longer run nVidia graphics on any of my PCs, so I can't tell you exactly
where it might be.
The best drivers will be at the nVidia website, not with Windows Update.

Hello Shenan
Now you are asking for a 'leap of faith' into the realms of which I have, as
yet, not dared to venture or need to go - yet.
I will look into your questions closely and see what I find.

Hello Shenan
Further to the above, I have restarted the computer - I do not watch
start-up - I gave up watching paint dry and grass grow when I came out of
therapy some years ago
That black section is there all the way through the start-up sequence
It is not always the same width, but its there - its at its widest in
desktop.
