Laptops are proprietary. Any XP drivers needed for it have to come from
Sony. If they are not supplying any XP drivers for it, then you might not
be able to run XP. MS doesn't write drivers for hardware.

Then you should contact them, although I think the person you spoke to
at Sony was mistaken. Hardware mftrs. must write the drivers for their
hardware and submit them to Microsoft. Microsoft does not write drivers
for other people's hardware. Sony is responsible for providing drivers
for their machines. As Rock told you, if Sony does not provide drivers
for XP for your model machine then you will not be able to run XP on it.
Return the machine if it will not do what you want.
As for contacting Microsoft, here are a few links which may help you:

LOL. This particular notebook comes original from SONY with Vista. It
means that SONY will only provide support for VISTA and all hardware
drivers written for VISTA in this model. AFAIK, Microsoft has no role
in providing any support for the downgrade to Windows XP nor would it
assume any liability in making any recommendations.
Best chance might be to visit a local SONY VAIO distributor and be
very polite in soliciting advice and information from the resident
techie. Windows XP is not an advertised option for this notebook.

I don't know why they told you that. Any drivers MS has for hardware are
provided by Sony. Sounds like they were just passing the buck so to speak.
FYI this newsgroup is not MS support. It is a peer to peer support
newsgroup.
With the release of Vista some computer manufacturer's are not creating XP
drivers for their new hardware. I think you are caught in this situation.
Check on the Sony website. If there are no XP drivers for your laptop, then
it's not going to work.
You might want to think about returning it and getting a different model or
brand that will support XP.

I am trying to do the same thing with a sony TX5 because autocad won't
run in vista.
I will let you know how I get on.
How can sony drop support for XP whilst it is still a current product.
Vista is still in its early stages and is by no means a buisness
operating platform.
I can understand dropping support when MS do but at this stage it is
ludicrus.
