In XP/SP3, all of a sudden last night and this morning email to my
main account is being routed to Outlook instead of to my default email
client Sylpheed (it's also bypassing Mailwasher, which is set to
receive mail first for this account). The Outlook symbol is in the
notification tray and email is there. Also, I can send email
successfully to the Mailwasher/Sylpheed account from Yahoo mail, but all
attempts to forward the email that's gone to Outlook end up only being
received in Outlook, and not seen by MW/Sylpheed.
I didn't change any settings and can't find any email settings that have
changed in XP, Mailwasher or Sylpheed. In years of computing using
non-MS mail programs, I've never seen this. Any ideas what might be
going on? Thanks.

This doesn't make sense. If you don't use Outlook, don't start it! Mail
can't "go to" an email program that isn't running! As to what happened,
probably you did some Office updates that made Outlook the default mail
program. Just change it back to Sylpheed with the Set Program Access &
Defaults in Control Panel.

No, it doesn't make sense, yet at least, but unfortunately it's
happening the way I described. Control Panel > Internet Options >
Programs was the first place I checked, and the email setting was
(and is) still for Sylpheed, as it has been for quite some time. The
Sylpheed and Mailwasher settings are correct as well. I hadn't done
anything to start Outlook, and AutoRuns Startup Manager found no
metnions of Outlook. There are three for Outlook Express, which had
been there for years without apparent effect (setup50.exe
(2) and shmgrate.exe, the NT user data migration tool). I disabled
those and rebooted. The last Office (2007) update was weeks ago. There
was a Win Defender defs update yesterday, but could that have caused
this? Right now, all new mail for my main account, except for those
Yahoo test sends, is coming in through Outlook. Perhaps something is
corrupted, but I'm not sure where to start.

P.S. I did just find an MS Outlook Custom Icon Handler (olkfstub.dll) in
start up, but that's also not new. The basic problem is mail is
all of a sudden not getting to Sylpheed/MW, which seem to be otherwise
working correctly, but being directed to Outlook. The reason why is
not apparent to me yet.

Once again, if you don't start Outlook it email can't "go to" it. So don't
start Outlook! Delete the Outlook entry in Startup.

It helps a lot! My guess is that yesterday's Defender update did
the damage. I'll check out the Outlook newsgroup. In my case, the
default settings didn't change. After I disabled the Outlook Express
startup files in Autoruns and rebooted, the problem changed to some
mail coming in the default acct and some in Outlook.

Thanks, Gerry. I have 2007, so I'll have to check applicability.
Looking up Office updates, the last system one was May 15. That makes
the timing of my troubles awfully curious.

Here's the 2007 bulletin: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944290: The
default e-mail client is changed to Outlook 2007 after you install the
2007 Office system.
I installed it last fall, so maybe it had a delayed detonation
mechanism. ;-(
