Post subject: Hibernation/Sleep mode problems Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>help_and_support (more info?)
Hello. Not sure what caused this, but i think it started happening after i
install a upgrade patch for xp, but i am having trouble with
hibernation/Sleep mode. When i go away for a bit and come back, my pc used to
sit there and powered up when i went away. Now, when i go do something and
come back in 10 minutes, my power button shows as "yellow". Im not sure if
this is hibernation mode or sleep mode. Regardless, when it does this, it
will not respond to resetting the machine, holding in the power button to
force shutdown. Basically, i have to unplug the power button physically from
the back of the pc. I also tried to mess around with the power systems,
putting them on "never" turning on hibernation/Sleep mode, but it keeps still
doing it. Can you help me figure out why it keeps doing this?
OS Information:
Windows XP SP3
ACPI Uniprocessor PC
I read that you need to update your audio/video drivers, but as far as i
know, there updated as high as they can go up to. Please help me. Thanks!

Some more inforrmation:
Technically, this is a desktop that i want to be on to use for college
papers and such. I can see this doing it with a laptop, but not even my
keyboard has hibernation buttons or standby buttons. I only wish to make this
stop doing this on my pc. Thanks for reading and the help.

To confirm or disprove whether or not it was a Windows update that caused
it, go to Windows Update and click on the "Review your update history" link.
Uninstall any of the ones that were installed right before this problem
started. Use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel, making sure the Show
Updates box is checked. If that fixes it, re-install them one at a time
until you find the one that causes it. Then you can uninstall it again and
hide that update on the update site so you are not prompted to install it
again.
Or you can do a System Restore to the point before the problem started and
see if that fixes it.
After your PC is running well again, double-check your Power Options in
Control Panel. Choose Always On for your power scheme. All the items below
it should say Never. If you're not going to use hibernation, turn it off on
the Hibernate tab. On the Advanced tab, pick what you would like the buttons
to do that are listed there. I have my power button set as Shut Down, and my
sleep button set as Do Nothing.
Also, look in your PC manual and see what the meaning of the yellow power
button is to see if it's for hibernation or sleep.
As an afterthought, what are your Automatic Update settings?
