Post subject: Hard Drive boot swap Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>general (more info?)
Hi
I have two 160Gd Hard drives (1 yr old). I want to check out if the boot c:
drive is faulty. My idea was to copy C: to D: and reconfigure d: to become c:
boot drive etc... Would anyone be able to talk me through it or point me in
the direction of further info. Is there any software that may be useful for
the swap.

You cannot copy XP from one drive to another; not all files needed can be
copied because they will be "in use". To do it, you will need to either
install XP on the other drive, or use a cloning program such as Norton Ghost
or Acronis True Image, neither of which are free but not expensive. You CAN
copy your data though.

You could use the drive manufacturers clone utility. Visit the
manufacturers website, download it and then follow the instructions to
make a clone on the second drive.

Have you downloaded a drive diagnostic utility from the hard drive
manufacturer's web site and run that to test the drive?
The way to do what you want is to clone the the drive using something like
Acronis True Image Home, version 10, Norton Ghost, BootIt NG or Casper XP.
