Help. My Quick Launch toolbar disappears in Windows XP.
Is there a freeware program to return the Microsoft Windows Quicklaunch to
the desired state in the Windows taskbar?
Whenever my WinXP SP3 pc abnormally shuts down, I have to reset the WinXP
quicklaunch in the toolbar because the windows quicklaunch disappears. (Of
course, you'll say "don't abnormally shut down" but the fact remains, that
after a forced reboot, the quick launch is more often than not, missing.)
Each time, I have to manually run the following six (6) steps:
0. Right click in the windows taskbar to uncheck "Lock the taskbar"
1. Right click in the windows task bar to check "Toolbars -> Quick Launch"
2. Left click and hold and then move the border between the quick launch
and the running programs icons away, so as to give enough right click room
in the quick launch bar for the next step
3. Once you have enough room in the windows quicklaunch bar, right click in
the newly created empty space in the quick launch bar and select "View ->
Small icons"
4. Manually move the border between the Microsoft Windows XP quicklaunch
and the running programs' icons back up to the end of the now small
quicklaunch icons
5. Right click in the empty space created in the taskbar and select "Lock
the taskbar".
Instead of manually running these six (6) steps each time Windows loses the
quicklaunch bar, wouldn't it be easier if there were freeware existing that
accomplishes the task.
Do you know if there is any Windows freeware to restore the quicklaunch
properly after it's lost? (Why does the windows quicklaunch disappear
anyway?)

You should find it works if you add one more step:
6. reboot.

BTW, I tried the following but the Windows quicklaunch is gone more often
than not after an unscheduled reboot.
1. I right clicked in on the Windows "Start" button, selected "Properties",
went to the "Taskbar" tab in "Classic Start menu" mode, and checked and
unchecked repeatedly the "Show Quick Launch" icon, and then pressed the
"Apply" button each time. This did nothing useful.
2. I right clicked on WIN XP START button, pressed "Properties" then went
to the "Taskbar" tab, and unchecked the "Show Quick Launch" box. Then I ran
Start -> Run -> REGSVR32 /i SHELL32.DLL
Then I went back to the WinXP start button, properties, Taskbar, and
checked the "Show QuickLaunch" box and rebooted windows xp.
3. I started the Windows Registry Editor (Start -> Run- -> regedit) and
navigated to the key/value pair:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\explorer
I didn't have a value named "NoSaveSettings" so I created it and set it to
0 like it's supposed to be (so that Explorer will save its settings).
I then retoggled the Start menu quicklaunch toolbar settings as recommended
at:
http://discuss.pcmag.com/forums/thread/1004375696.aspx
4. Again, I started the Windows XP registry editor, and navigated to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Finding a text value named "Userinit", I changed it from:
C:\my os\windows\SYSTEM32\wsaupdater.exe
to:
C:\my os\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,
Note the comma is important!
None of these have prevented the Windows quicklaunch from disappearing when
the PC abnormally reboots. So that's why I ask if there is freeware that
simply restores the 6 steps I have to do manually to get the quicklaunch
back.
Is there freeware that restores the Windows quicklaunch more easily than
the six steps it takes to restore the Windows quicklaunch toolbar manually?

I received in my email the following recommended freeware solutions to the
disappearing quicklaunch taskbar that I'll check out to see if they work.

What's up with the unscheduled, abnormal reboots?
