I had this exception coming from the time of booting and stays on..
with some help from my pal who recovered from the same prob, we found
that after installing kaspersky antivirus and scanning, it identified
a trojan 'scvhsot.exe' in teh system folder. On dleteing this file,
and rebooting ,the exception stops coming. Also, remember to empty the
autorun.inf files of all ur drives, cause the files specifiy sss.exe
to be opened, and i presume this sss.exe is causing the exception.
kaspersky identifies all these. so jus install and let it identify.
To find the autorun.inf u can use 'ava find Professional'. Remember to
change file permissions to enable u to delete the contents of the
autorun.inf files, once u empty all the autorun.inf of all ur drives,
reboot.. u shudn't be having a problem, tell me if it works.

Re Posting below, Yes it does cure the problem so far, BUT notice on your start up programmes along the right tool bar WINDOWS MESSENGER SERVICE has now been added, Which I deleted previously as I did not want it, I wonder is this a Micriosoft ploy for people to use this service, as recently, they are guilty of putting downloads on your machine without your permission, even as I do have Updates enabled so as I DECIDE WHAT IS DOWNLOADED AND GOES ON MY MACHINE.
I feel it is a Microsoft initiated problem, time will tell
UPDATE 21st October the fix lasted 24hours now problem back have redone the fix suggested, I am pretty sure this problem will come back, and it has so the fix does not work, I have noticed on other sites and this one there seems to be MANY DIFFERENT SUGGESTIONS why this problem is arising, even after a CLEAN INSTALL, tried all but not the clean install, This ONE has me beat, I still feel it is a Microsoft Operating System update that has gone wrong, as the only common factor to all the suggestions given re trying to cure the problem, is that all the systems are running XP.
Tried the Hitman Pro solution, Didnt work.
Now trying the uninstalling of AVG and reinstalling of it to see if that solves the problem.Has come back but seems to be linked to the AVG Shortcut on the desktop which opens the Test centre of AVG. Going to uninstall the programme again and also search for any AVG files left and uninstall them. Still there, this one has me beaten next step will be to wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall windows and my programmes, PLEASE NOTE I run two ther computers with the exact same programmes, and it hasnt happened to them, the one it has happened on is my back up computer which I use for skype and internet calls.com. the main one i use all the time it hasny happened to, very strange. could it be linked to this "Storm Worm" that there was a write up on the Sunday Observer 21st October 2007 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting that people are finding this one hard to pin down, that is to
say - suspecting a range of different things
For the past few days on my PC, I've been suspecting that it's a
drive:pathname to to a Word document on a USB pen-drive - ( drive N: in
my case ) ...for which I have a Quick Launch icon. ...I was suspecting that
XP didn't like there being no such drive lettter allocated until I plugged
in the pen-drive. If I clear the "recently used documents list" at Start |
Settings | Taskbar and Start Menu | Start Menu tab | Custonize (Classic
Start Menu) | Clear
....the problem seems to go away, however, I'm not sure about that !!

RE POSTING BELOW thanks for the advice have removed the USB Flash removable disk and kept the DVD drive, Floppy drive, CDRW drive, Floppy drive, 6 in 1 Card reader and Zip drive. So far so good on three reboots it seems to at present solved the problem many thanks. will repost if problem reoccurs.
SORRY to report on turning on this morning itis BACK have now removed the drive letter to the 6 in 1 card reader.
Will report back tomorrow as it appears every morning on start up after the computer has been lying dormant.
NO JOY it now appears on other shortcuts as well, I have tried all the Suggestions I am now going to format the hard drive and do a Clean Install as this one has me beaten. thanks for all the suggestions but none have worked for me. it would be interesting if the people who have made suggestions in the past would update to confirm if their cure perminantly resolved this problem.
Wiped the hard drive clean. Then a clean install loaded Avast then scanned no problems, then loaded Comodo firewall and disabled windows firewall, reinstalled my sound card drivers,, loaded Mcafee Site adviser, Comodo verification engine, Conmodo antispyware, Spyware Doctor, super antispyware, Spyware blaster, Spybot search and destroy, Spyware terminator, AdAware, Secunia beta. Aystem scanned with alltoools NO VIRUSES WORMS OR SPYWARE WENT TO BED.
Got up turned on the machine AND ITS BACK !!!!!!!!
now thinking I have a Hard Ware fault, this is a real brute. Feel like dumping the machine.
May have tracked it down to an inbuilt Faulty Zip Drive, although it workes OK and there are no yellow ! marks on the Device manager list, I have disabled it by removing the power from the drive and the other Wirinng. TOMORROW MORNING WILL TELL if it has cured the problem

This problem also happens if you change the drive letters of your drives, and/or you have drive letter conflicts. Perhaps you have a network drive mapped that is conflicting with a local removable media drive letter. Or, any combination of the above.
Try... Right-click My Computer, and select Manage, then go into the Disk Management section.
Check your drive letter assignments and if you see any obvious conflicts change them, or at least as a test remove the drive letters for all the removeable drives to see if it fixes your problem.
On a side-note, I have a USB card reader which provides 4 drives in explorer :/ a little bit excessive. What I do, is remove the drive letters completely and mount the drives in folders... C:Removable Media... then folders called CF, SD, MS, etc.
