Post subject: Can't update windows vista
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>performance_maintenance (more info?)

Hi,

Hope someone can help. I have searched the internet and found several ans.
but none have worked.

When I try to update Vista Ultimate, the window freezes and goes nowhere.
Only way to close it is through Task Manager.

I have an HP laptop. I have registered suggested dll's, downloaded and ran
progs that did this for me, I have deleted the SoftwareDistribution file and
so many other suggestions that I can't remember them all.

I have DreamScape installed but I can't remember if it was still working
after I installed it.

I am open to any suggestions. This is a fresh install (not upgrade) and I
hardly have anything on it except for AV and spyware progs. I have no bugs
as I have ran all my progs and all checks out.

HELP!!!

Sorry darkassain,

I am at my wits end with this thing. I should have given everyone more to
go on. I was tired and not thinking. Here's statistics and what I've
tried..

Clean install on 12/3 and SP1 installed same day. I installed Dreamscape 2
days later. I notice I have had no new updates since that day. Even
if I don't use DS (I am now using plain wallpaper) , it still won't update .
I am wondering if it is DS but it is SUPPOSED to work with it and I like it,
so I am hoping to keep it and find the fix.

I have tried sfc, cleaning out all temp files and renaming
SoftwareDistribution, closing down AV, ZA (no resident spyware/adware
removal prog. running). No proxy server is activated.

Used an update readiness tool, but no errors. Reregistered a long list of
dlls I was given
to no avail. Chkdsk ran. All Ok.

Followed these steps; cmd.exe as administrator / type: net stop wuauclt /
net stop bits. Start the services: net start wuauclt / net start bits
This didn't work either.

I found a registry fix named windows_update_fix_2.reg that was supposed to
fix the prob. and downloaded it. It didn't work.

I use IE8 and on the day I fresh installed. I have also tried a few other
tools I found on the internet and I can't find where they are at now to give
a name to them. I deleted them after they didn't work hence not knowing
their names. (They stopped the internet connection and reset whatever. I
am not well-versed in that area of computers so I can't say exactly what
they did.)

This ng is my last resort as I am tired of scouring the internet and finding
fixes that don't work. None of the things I have done worked and I have
tried at least 10 different fixes. If I have to, I will disable auto
updating and
download updates manually as I don't want to fresh install again.

Thanks for any and all replies and Happy New Year's everyone.

Okay, I have managed to get the update window (My computer/Rt click
Properties/Windows Update) and it finds the updates, (9 important updates
20.2MB, 35 Optional) but it freezes there. I left it running for 2 hours
and nothing at that point. The window just stalls and won't let me shut
down except for thru Task Manager. I'm still searching the internet for an
ans. but so far no go.
