Very poor networking performance in Vista...???

I've got 2 machines, both with clean installs if Vista Ultimate. They're
networked via a Linksys Router. The same Linksys router I've used for the
past 3 years or so without any problems what-so-ever.

I've created some networking shares between the machines and I've mapped
some network drives. Browsing the network devices and mapping drives seems
to work as expected. It's transferring files over the network that is
seemingly horrible.

When I try and transfer a simple 30MB file over the network onto the other
machine I have to sit and watch this "calculating time" thing for a good 20 -
30 seconds or so and then finally it'll start copying. On XP I didn't have
that initial time to wait before it started copying. If I try and drag, say,
650MB over the network there's no telling how long I'll have to wait for the
"calculate" process. Sometimes it goes rather quickly, sometimes not. Many
times it's taken so long that I give up and try and cancel. Then I get to
stare at a "canceling" screen for a long time until FINALLY they'll go away
after about 5 min or so....but no fiiles have been transfered of course
because I canceled it.

I also use Dreamweaver and I'm using one of the machines as my test server.
So in Dreamweaver I have it setup (just like I have for years) with a testing
server on the local/network. I set the testing server to the mapped drive I
have on the machine. With XP Pro when I had this exact same configuration
and would upload a file from Dreamweaver onto the test server it was instant.
I could barely even see the trasferring window and sometimes didn't see it
at all.

Now, I have to sit for a good 30 - 45 seconds or so staring at the animated
circle. Then Dreamweaver says Not Responding and it's about that time the
file actually does finally transfer.

Any information I can get on what might be causing this would be greatly
appreciated. It's rather aggrivating. Thanks!!!

One thing you might consider, since XP was working just fine for you, is to
re-install XP on both of your machines. Then wait for about a year. By then
Vista may have enough updates to have solved the Vista networking problems
you have recently encountered. Vista is, after all, a new software package,
and I am sure you have heard the words of caution about jumping onto a new
computer program "bandwagon" too soon.
