I ran XP, I installed Vista to the next partition, I want to eliminate XP,
but the Vista boot MANAGER is on the XP partition. I tried hiding the XP
partition, booting the Vista CD and doing a repair (twice) but when it
boots, it tells me NTLDR is missing.

Put the bootfiles from Vista at the Vista-partition and set the
bootindicator in the MBR at the Vista-partition.

Well, they all look very interesting and I had high hopes for /fixboot, but
even after all that, the boot MANAGER is still on D (the XP partition) -
even when that partition has been deleted. And the last time I booted into
the Vista CD, it couldn't find Vista at all. If I put XP back in, it boots
just fine.
I know of no other way than to completely re-install Vista withoug XP
present on the system - what a pain. Should have done that initially and
used a 3rd party booter.

With a diskeditor you can set the bootindicator at the Vista-partition.
The location for the first partition is 0x01BE and for the second
0x01CE, active is the value 0x80.

Boot.ini on the XP partition "refers" to the boot manager when Vista is
selected via the dual boot menu..
If not familiar with BCDedit consider a third party boot utility such a
VistaBootPro to provide for booting ditectly into Vista,

My bootmanager HWBOOT can help you too. It sets the bootindicator
at the partition of your choice. Even if you remove the bootmanager,
the choosen partition stays active.
