You Need to Enable net bios over Tcp/ip That worked for me after hours
of messing with windows firewall hope this helps.

I had the same problems until today. What I found is that if I had simple file sharing enabled on my XP machine, then I would need to set the Guest user group access to Power Users or Administrators to get it to work. By default, the Guest user only is a member of the Guests group.
If I turn off the simple file sharing, then it also works as long as I have users and passwords the same on all PCs.
