And as I said in my original post this has bee answered many times before,
plus I answered that it in my second post. What is it you don't understand
about, install XP, activate it, then install Vista? That means you can use
the license to reinstall.

No one here has seen a scenario where XP has to be reinstalled in order to
reinstall an upgrade edition of Vista. You cannot get a full answer yet.
No one has yet had access to an upgrade edition product key and won't until
the retail copies start shipping in a few days. Just wait until we have
some reports from users who have tried this scenario. You are obviously
concerned about committing to an upgrade edition at this point so I would
wait to buy Vista until there is definite word on how your scenario will or
will not work. My own opinion is that MS well knows this situation will
occur and will not block reactivation of XP as long as it is on the same
hardware as before. But that is only my opinion.

If the XP install is done from a retail or generic OEM key, it will
re-activate over the internet once 120 days have passed since last
activation. Presumably there's no way MS could prevent this, as it would
render Vista upgrades discs useless after one install.

It is rather ridiculous we are this close to launch
and do not have a definitive answer. Actually, it
is quite pathetic.

I couldn't sweet talk anyone at MS into letting me experiment with an
upgrade pk. Others who post here tried also. Nothing more we can do.

Makes you wonder what Microsoft didn't consider and is rushing to get in
place by the time it is critical.

Colin, I'm sure you have tried and are just as frustrated about
the lack of info as any of us. I realize it's not the fault of MVPs,
it is Microsoft's fault. 8 days from launch and it's still a guessing
game. Pitiful.
I do appreciate your efforts and those of others who have tried
to get this figured out. I just don't understand what purpose it serves
to treat this as some top secret project.... it just doesn't make sense.
