When I first got this Vista, I tried their Defrag, after deleting stuff I
did not want, and adding stuff I did want. I had the same question, why it
would not show what was going on, how long. I waited till it finally
finished, then said "performance can be increased if you defrag" or
something like that. I ran it again, same thing. I asked here and someone
recommended Auslogics, it's free and shows you what's going on. Then others
recommended Jkdefrag also free. I tried it. Just ran it last night, when I
just went and did the Vista defrag it said "you do not need to defrag this
drive".

Don't waste your money. Vista's built-in defrag works fine. Furthermore,
it doesn't mess with the file placement algorithms which Vista uses to
optimise start up times.

There is really no point whatsoever in wasting your money on Diskeeper.

Forget about fragmentation and get on with actually using your computer.

Hi Distorted Vision,

Let me try to answer your questions. I apologize for the numerous links, but
they answer your questions in more detail than I could write here.

(1) There will be no adverse impact of Diskeeper on other running
applications including games. InvisiTasking - the technology that drives the
Diskeeper 2008 resource usage will *always* give priority to other resources.
Please try this yourself when you are evaluating the trial version of
Diskeeper. Run Diskeeper in the automatic defrag mode and use your PC as you
normally would.

More information on InvisiTasking can be found at our website or this
Diskeeper blog article
http://www.diskeeperblog.com/archives/2006/10/dont_bogart_my.html

(2) More on I-FAAST, caching etc
http://www.diskeeperblog.com/archives/2006/09/inside_ifaast.html

(3) Boot-time defragmentation is currently disabled in Vista/SP1 for
Diskeeper 2008 (build 781) due to incompatibilities. It will be re-instated
soon through an update.
Please see the following links.
http://www.diskeeperblog.com/archives/2008/04/new_diskeeper_2_1.html
and
http://www.diskeeperblog.com/archives/2008/07/field_testers_n.html

(4) For automatic defragmentation, the GUI does not need to be active/open,
but the Diskeeper Service should be set on automatic and running. All you
need to do is right click on the relevant volume and ensure that automatic
defragmentation is enabled. (Or during the installation itself where such an
option to automatically defrag the system is selected by default)

Hope this helps.

Best regards

I'll put in a vote for Raxco PerfectDisk. Been using it for years with WinXP
and your defragment chore is greatly reduced.
I haven't used it with Vista at all so can't give a recommendation on that.
My Vista system is just a learning tool plaything right now.
I have multiple drives divided into multiple partitions (JBOD) and have
allocated one partition for database files & cache that change daily.
With PerfectDisk my defragmentation chore has gone from weekly to monthly if
not bi-monthly.

Don't beat up your hard drives with daily 24hr defragmentation. All my disks
(Raptors, 15k SCSI, etc) are approaching their 5 year end of warranty time
in the next 4 months with no failures.

Have used latest versions of both Diskeeper and PerfectDisk.
In my opinion, PerfectDisk wins hands up!

Personally I prefer Raxco's Perfect Disk.

I have to say that I've seen live demonstrations of Diskeeper vs
PerfectDisk on the latest versions running side by side on identical
machines with imaged drives that were in serious need of
defragmentation - and Diskeeper got it's butt kicked hard. It just
gave up and would not defrag the drive at all because the drive was
all jacked up. It just kept saying that the drive status was
"Critical" - which is annoying if Diskeeper won't actually DO anything
about it.

Mind you it took PerfectDisk hours to fix that drive but when it was
done, an analysis with both Diskeeper and PerfectDisk showed that the
drive was completely turned around.
Diskeeper was then run on the PerfectDisk drive and it still didn't do
any work, it said everything was Perfect. Then PerfectDisk was run and
it found some things it could further improve and made the drive
pristine in two passes which apparently Diskeeper would have
perpetually failed to do altogether.

So I'm sorry to say that all your propaganda links mean nothing
because when put up against other products Diskeeper is a joke, and if
you browse the web and look for people comparisons you see all the
time that people agree that Diskeeper stinks. Seeing is believing and
I for one an convinced that Diskeeper is the most over priced piece of
garbage I've ever seen. The price you charge you for it is absolutely
criminal, I feel sorry for whoever buys it, and I don't believe
thieves have any credibility.

The real competition is PerfectDisk vs all these free tools.
PerfectDisk is still the best over all and I've tried them all and the
price is reasonable and it looks like recently they have been adding
more and more features to keep the value high. I much rather pay for a
PerfectDisk license just to know I have the best that's out there.

Thanks for all the replies. I've decided to go for Perfect Disk 2008
Professional after evaluating it and also Diskeeper 2008 and O&O
Defrag 10. A few comments on the later two. Alot of people seem to
recommend Diskeeper but I don't like the idea of having the
defragmentation process happening 24/7. I appreciate that its supposed
not to affect system performance and also it can be set to manual
anyway. But it kind of defeats the purpose of chosing it when that
seems to be its selling feature. Also I wasn't that keen on the
interface in Diskeeper. With O&O Defrag 10 there were a few things I
didn't like. Most importantly defragging with it too far longer than
with any of the others. I was using the Complete/Access method. Also
even after running this several times it was showing that my system
had a 42% fragmentation with clean install of Vista and applications
etc. This didn't seem right to me.

Perfectdisk seems to perform best for me. In terms of speed, the
interface, offline defragmentation and reduction in future
fragmentation.

Thanks for all your help!
