file moving and organisation proplems

Error Message: (The source file names are larger than that which is
supported by the file system try moving it to a location which has a
shorter path name or try renaming it to a shorter name before attempting
this operation.) what is that and how do i make it so i never see it
again ?? I usually get it when im moving files or trying to delete them.
And how do i permanently change all my views to list view in all my
files ? I always have to go to view and change it to list and i'm
constantly going to organize / folder and search options / view / apply
to folders and yes in the dialog box to apply to all folders then after
a short time some of them, if not all are gone back to other types. I
want them to to stay on list forever.

Hi, tyrram ... I gave up long ago trying to get all my folders to stay the
way I put them. There are various things that can cause folders to change to
another view. I am sorry this is so ... maybe there is some magic trick we
don't know about ... but, I haven't found the trick yet.

As for the name path problem ... you will see this from time to time. When
you are organizing your files, try to keep the names of your folders short
.... also the names of your files. I have a tendency to have really long file
names, so, I have had this problem also. I try not to nest my folders too
deep ... I will have things set up this way ... Documents, and then there
will be twelve to twenty categories of documents in the Documents folder.
One of those folders will be named PDFs. Inside that folder will be a bunch
of folders for each source of PDF files. I stop there. Three deep on the
folders.

Once you start having folders inside of folders inside of folders ... on and
on ... your path to your files becomes really long. I don't remember if the
cutoff on number of characters is 128 or 256 or some other number, but there
IS a limit. Keeping folder names short and only three deep will help. It
also matters what operating system you are running and what format was used
for the hard drive, thumb drive, floppy drive. There is a new format called
EX-FAT that helps with this problem for thumb drives. It is much better than
plain old FAT and better than FAT32.
