Ok, ive just tried to download the Microsoft Accounting Professional trial
again.
The filename is x13-40152.exe

The Error for this file is:-

Windows Security Warning

Windows found that this file is potentially harmful.

To help protect your computer. Windows has blocked access to this file

Name: X13-40152.exe

How does this protect my computer?(hyperlink)

On clicking the hyperlink , windows help and support appears and shows " Why
can't i view an attachment in Windows Mail"

Windows mail blocks certain types of file attachments that are commonly used
to spread e-mail viruses.................. you get the idea

I think this wasnt caught in the testing phase, its a bit annoying that the
help and support shows Mail which is nothing to do with the download and
windows blocking access.

As i previously mentioned, i cannot see anywhere in folder attributes or
windows defender, which where my first thoughts on what might be stopping
this.

Please let us know how to stop this, or ultimately change it so we can run
downloaded .exe if we trust the source they are coming from i.e. Microsoft
websites

Thanks

How exactly are you attempting the download? Are you trying to save the
file to disk or trying to download and run it at the same time? Are you
using IE or another browser? Do you have User Account Control enabled or
disabled? If you're using IE is it in Protected Mode (look at the status
bar at the bottom of the window). What is the URL to the file in question?

hi Paul,

I am just trying to save the file to disk.

I am using a one week old Toshiba Qosmio G.45 notebook which came
pre-installed with vista ultimate. It has Internet Explorer version 7.0.6000
..16546

user account control is disabled.

Internet protection mode is off.

The URL is http://www.ideawins.com/OAProDownloads1.aspx

I am pretty certain that vista would block any.exe file as mentioned
previously it also blocked Microsoft office ultimate trial.

I have not made any adjustments to Internet explorer. There seem to be
other posts in other forums showing other people having the same problems.

So I think this is a default option set in vista where it automatically
blocks access to.exe files due to potential virus problems.

Regards,

Jon

Is your machine standalone or a member of a domain? I just tried it 3 ways
using Vista Ultimate. One Standalone, one in test Domain "A" and one in
test Domain "B".

Standalone machine worked fine to download the file and I was able to launch
it. (launching it unpacked files to a temp directory and then started the
install of Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2007).

Member of test Domain "A" that has very relaxed GPO settings, same as above.

Test Domain "B" where I have very strict GPO settings, including a security
setting to prevent downloading of files with Internet Explorer, doanload was
blocked.

Has anyone found a fix to this? I too am running Vista Ultimate on a
new machine. I have tried everything I could think of --- disabling
user control, disabling windows defender entirely, turned internet
explorer protected mode off, checked every place in my firewall
(mcafee), have windows firewall disabled but still get that same
annoying message. I get the exact error message:

Windows Security Warning

(image of red shield with X inside it) Windows has found that this
file is potentially harmful.
To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this
file.

Name: nameoffile.exe

How does this help me protect my computer (link to help file telling
of file attachments in outlook)

Yes, I have checked Windows Outlook but it says only to rename the
files to attach them or upload them to a server such as MSN. However,
this does not address the fact that EXEs are not allowed to be
dowloaded at all.

I have found a workaround for all of us that are frustrated to tears
over this big brother style of "controlling viruses" ie we know what
is good for you, you do not.

There are two workarounds:

Work around #1

When you click on a download link and it is an exe file, choose save
as and rename the exe portion to .ok or some other nonsense and change
save as file type from application to "all files"
When you want to use the file, rename it back to exe.

Work Around #2

Click on the download link choosing "save as". Have the location
folder you are downloading to open and visable.
When the file completes download, you'll get the Security Warning. DO
NOT CLICK OK!
Right click on the file you just downloaded, ignoring the Security
Warning Window and choose "copy"
Then go back to the security warning and click ok. You'll see your
download disappear. But .. right click and choose "paste" in the
download window and Voila! - your download is back.

Good Luck. Please email me if anybody finds a real fix, please.
