Vista Clean-up utility often advises me that it wishes to delete the files
(in subject line). These files are Java update files, and other important
programs that I must have. So..... is it really OK to delete these (since
the programs may already have been installed and the files are no longer
needed?) I'm a newbie -- please comment!

Finally, Vista always tells me that I don't need to defrag when I access the
defrag utility -- my "file system is good." Should I defrag anyways???
Thanks.

No do not delete that file . That is a protected file which includes the Office Update installation engine ,Office Genuine Advantage Tool, Java Runtime Environment etc.etc, They all also include all the Dependencies and versions

This file is named Downloaded Program Files and it resides in c:\Windows

Hi ELW,

If you are talking about the options in Disk Cleanup when using Control
Panel\System and Maintenance\Administrative Tools then, yes, you can safely
delete Downloaded Program Files. These files are used by your browser
(usually IE) and are temporary.

You do not need to manually defrag your disk drive unless you have been
adding and deleting hundreds of folders and files in a relatively short
period of time. Vista automatically defrags your drive on a regular schedule
unless that schedule is modified. You can look at the defrag schedule doing
this:

Computer > Local Drive (CSmile right click, >Properties >Tools> Defragment Now
> Modify schedule. Now you can choose your options.

Reply: Strange, but I'll take your word on it. Nevertheless, why does
Vista's Clean-up utility advise that these CAN be deleted to free up disk
space??

Thanks Paul. However, look at the reply from Peter Foldes -- the next one
in line. I'm confused. Time for a Budweiser.

I have very good evidence that Peter sometimes is out in space. You
are talking about what you see in the disk cleanup utility.

I have no idea what he was talking about - and he had no idea what YOU
were talking about.

The tick-box for those items is ticked by default. It is SAFE to
delete therm.
