I've had my computer for about two months now. It came with Windows Vista. I
installed Norton antivirus on it right away. For the past month it's been
crashing almost every other day.

I have no idea what is going on. I asked a Dell tech and they said to run
startup repair, but I'm still having problems.

Thanks!

hello can't remember where i read it before it may be a post from here.
Norton and vista don't like to play nice together. and i recall
something
about uninstalling it and then there was a program to remove the (reg)
settings.then it went on saying about downloading (Avast4) free
antivirus
software. i downloaded it and it works fine . you may want to do a
search
for more help on this and see if maybe there's a patch out there now
for it.

I've had this for a year now but Norton after the last update has been
behaving in pretty much the same way, difference is, Vista won't start.
Norton says to uninstall then re install the anti virus software. I am not
enthusiastic about it working. I suspect you will find a lot of conflicts
between Vista and many of your programs. I know I did. The un install
software is available from Norton. Go to troubleshoot and error messages.
Good luck.

i use ZoneAlarm Security Suite (with Antirvirus) and the AntiVirus can be
Enabled or Disabled - but i keep it disabled all the time. i never used
anti-virus for almost ten years now - i only use Zone ALarm firewal with
anti-spyware enabled.

using anti-virus can attract more viruses into your PC - i think firewall
is enough - try it http://www.zonealarm.com

thjere is

Then you need to go back to Dell
BTW Dell usually supplies trial AV software, did you uninstall that first?
Is the Norton version you install Vista compatible?

Hey there Taurus,

I know everyone is telling you to uninstall Norton, but let's try to get
confirmation that Norton is actually the issue first.

Go to Start>Search> Type in compmgmt.msc
Click on System Tools>Reliability and Performance>Monitoring
Tools>Reliability Monitor
Click on a day that you experienced a crash and look for any red x's or
yellow warning symbols. That will correspond with either an application
failure, hardware failure or somesuch. See what actually failed and post it
in here if you're not sure what it is.

Let me know if this helps!

Best Regards,

Will

Absolutely not! That statement is completely wrong.

No anti-virus program can ever be perfect, and even the best one can't
protect you against the latest virus that appeared in the field just
after the newest virus definitions became available to you and you
installed them. But no anti-virus program--not even the worst one--can
"attract" a virus.
