I thought "sfc /scannow" when run with administrator privileges would give
you the chance to fix that up... ?

I haven't replaced my mf.dll with the previous posters link but on
running "sfc /scannow" I receive the following notice:

*Windows Resource Protection found some corrupt files but was unable to
fix some of them. *

The clarification of importance would be: did you run that with
administrative credentials? If you ran it from cmd.exe when you run cmd.exe
as an administrator, it could potentially help you fix the issue. If not,
it could not help you fix the issue.

Yes, I was only able to run it as an administrator in the first place,
the command doesn't work for me otherwise.

I updated my SigmaTel audio driver, recommended to me by my Dell Support
Center application and this allowed me to finally view Windows Vista
Service Pack 1 Update. Having updated to Service Pack 1 Windows Media
Player seems to be behaving normally!

Do you have ScrchPg.dll on your system? That might cause this type of
error.
