Post subject: Windows cannot change your password - BUT IT DID. Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>administration_accounts_passwords (more info?)
Hi all,
I'm currently using Vista Home Premium with 1 admin account and 1 guest
account.
Sadly when I went to change my password for my admin account, I was
prompted saying that my password was unable to be changed. I thought
nothing of it. I tried to change it again but it said my "current"
password is incorrect? It was right the first time.
I am forced to conclude Windows has changed my password.
I use my previous password - NOT WORKING.
I use the password I tried to change it to - NOT WORKING.
So I shut down my computer, only to open it the next day with every
password attempt failing.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Can anyone recommend any fix.
All I need is my files back, even if I do have to re-install Windows
itself.
I really need my account back. It has my whole life on there; sadly not
backed up.
Your help and patience is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Melissa.

You can reinstall Vista but make sure to install on free space or use
resizing to create free space and install onto the free space to not
overwrite your data.
If you need access to you files back you can boot using a bootable CDrom of
a linux distro like ubuntu and be able to access all your files without
having to install.
Note: if you have used disk/file encryption you will not be able to see your
data.
Good luck.
