Post subject: kb943996 worked for me but...
hi
thanks to those who posted the kb943996 solution from microsoft. I was having the _exact_ same issue as Jacob and the others with the firewall failing to start, with the exact same diagnostic outputs to all the diagnostics he ran.
It fixed my firewall issue and I was able to start my firewall up right away (w/o rebooting, incidentally).
But, the whole reason I noticed that my firewall was down is that lately, all of a sudden, I have been unable to share my files from this vista home premium 32 desktop with my xp pro laptop. Notice, I said lately. I USED to be able to share files with my laptop. All of a sudden, they cannot see each other. I have tried everything I can think of.
And YES, I did apply the patch to the XP laptop so it can use the vista LLTD protocol. Actually, it's xp sp3 and when I tried to install the LLTD patch, it said the patch is older than my version of xp, so I already have the patch and do not need to install it.
And like I said, I used to be able to share files between these computers. And suddenly, they cannot see each other. That's when i noticed the vista firewall was down, and I couldn't ping the vista machine from the laptop at all. I noticed that I could not start up the firewall, and surmised that the failure of the firewall might relate to its inability to respond to pings. So I applied the fix to the firewall, and now I can ping the vista machine from the laptop again (that is, the laptop will receive ping responses from the vista machine). But, I still cannot share files between them (yes, I rebooted the vista machine).
So I'm thinking it's the vista machine being screwed up somehow, and has something to do with this firewall bug/problem, though the firewall is working (supposedly) now.
Also, I have a network printer (wired ethernet to router) on my local network, and my xp pro machine can see it on the network, but my vista machine cannot see it (though it can print to it using the IP address!!!). And I can access the internet from my vista machine. That's yet another reason I suspect the problem is with the vista machine, since it cannot see the xp laptop or the network printer on the local network. The vista machine is connected wirelessly to the local network.
