OK My problem is similar enough to post, the only difference is I'm
running x64 Ultimate. Since yesterdays update, no USB mouse will work.
To troubleshoot I:
Changed batteries.
Changed the Mouse to a different USB mouse
Changed the USB ports.
Tried PS2
PS2 are the only ones that work.
My USB ports are fine, I can see drives etc from them, but not the
mice. When I try to plug in my logitech Cordless Trackman, it tries to
install drivers, which it doesn't need to do. What the...
Soooooo who do I yell at to get my mice working again? I hate ps2.

x64 vista home premium here, I narrowed down my problem to vista trying to
find a driver for HID mouse, if i cancel out it keeps working without error,
just pops up everytime i reboot... new hardware found and driver instal
failed. Mouse shows no error in device manager and I installed 64bit
intellipoint with no problem, just no driver for HID mouse device. The
problem is definetly related to USB , HID, and seemingly the patch a few days
ago triggered it, although removing the patches did not fix it for me.

Hi all. Hope this helps some. I caught the updater before it could start up
and manually installed and rebooted after each update. My Mouse went bye bye
on Vista (KB938371). Did a restare and all was well. I am putting update on
manual until I see a fix has been issued. I suggest the rest do the same.

Same exact problem here, but Vista 64 Ultimate.
Installed KB938371, and at first bootup lost use of my Logitech USB
Trackman Wheel. It was showing up as a Generic USB HID device, and not
responding..
Other drivers were showing up as "unknown device", when I rebooted, it
turned out that was my keyboard and laptop's touchpad - both of which
interface through USB.
On that second reboot, keyboard and mouse stopped working completely -
and computer was as good as dead. Luckily had a full backup. I've
found no other solutions yet. Installing drivers manually gives me
errors about "access denied", "file not found" or messages about the
driver being "designed for windows 95 or later" and missing part of
the INF file.
This is a REALLY, REALLY bad one, MS. As another poster mentioned, a
lot of folks having this problem won't even be able to respond or
complain online, and I'll bet it'll take a few days before the Tier 1
tech support people at MS's call centers realizes it's not just people
with faulty cables / unplugged mice.
This has been the first update in years that has simply knocked my
computer dead. Automatic updates are now OFF, and will remain so..
Hopefully a hotfix comes in days - not weeks.

I fixed my problem by going to device manager and uninstalling
everything under the HID section. Mouse now finally works after 2 days
of struggling to fix it.

All this week I'd work out of my office. I left my mouse on work table and
use my HP Compaq nc6320 laptop without it. I'm back today and found my usb
mouse doesn't work now. It works good on my wife HP Compaq nc6320 with
Windows XP but not for me with my vista business.

Like me! I spent two days repeatedly hard-rebooting my computer (ie just
pulling the plug out) until eventually Vista installed the mouse and
keyboard drivers.

OK, I will try that.
BTW, why don't they just call it a frigging mouse in Device Manager? Did Dr
Spock design Windows?
