LoL, I know and fully agree, but to make sure I was clear on what i was
doing....
In device manager there is a catagory called mice and other pointing
devices. In that catagory it is called mouse, and uses the intellipoint
software for a microsoft mouse.
The change I made was in the Device manager also, in the catagory "Human
interface Devices" and i changed it FROM mouse TO HID-compliant consumer
control device. Having 2 places with the mouse listed was either causing the
conflict, or blocking the load of the driver, when it requires this usbtype
driver instead, I am hoping this includes keyboards for those having usb
keyboard problems also.
From what I read and correct me if I am wrong (sure someone will ) HID was
supposed to replace/upgrade the usb interfaces and never fully reached it's
potential and was integrated instead. I look at it as a bridge between the
onboard USB hubs and the system interface. So something like, mouse/keyboard
to USB hub to HID interface to System (where the device is finally called
mouse or keyboard, hard drive, etc). No reason why vista or the last patch
interuptted this, but if you look at some the posts over the last 18 months,
several vista patches has had this effect.
As a side note for self builders and upgraders, Improper power supply size
can cause havok with usb devices. Ya I learned that one the hard way too

I found solution on MSDN forums Third item from below guide help me. My
usb mouse work again.
Symptoms: Old usb devices worked fine
new usb devices would not install
patch Windows6.0-KB940199-x86 or x64 would not install (error "this update
does not apply to your system")
pointing the installation to C:\windows\system32 returned an error
The issue is solved now and I took a few roads to get here. I tried moving
around the usbstor and deleting the infcache.1 with no results. My computer
had best results with number 3 but i will post all my steps.
1. I opened the device manager and uninstalled all the entries under
Universal Serial Bus Controller. Vista will try to reinstal them as you
uninstal, just keep track of what you have uninstalled already. After you
have uninstalled all the entries restart Vista. After this I tried installing
my new usb device... no luck
2. Download update KB940119 (either x86 or x64), using 7-zip extract the
installation file and copy the file Windows6.0-KB940199-x86.cab to c:\ (i
choose c:\ because it was easy to type). In CMD type "start /w pkgmgr /ip
/m:c:\Windows6.0-KB940199-x86.cab" (copied from earlier post xechvol) after
install, reboot machine again. I tried my devices after this and again
nothing.
3. After plugging in my new usb device, from the Device Manager window,
click "Unknown Device" and click update driver. Click Browse My Computer for
Driver Software. Either navigate to or type C:\Windows\winsxs and go on from
there. This one worked for me after pulling up a warning about the driver not
being digitally signed or something.
I have rebooted my computer and installed 3 other new usb devices all of
different nature and all three have installed fine without needing any input
from me (just the way it used to be).

Sorry to report, but I was never able to recover from this error.
PS2 mouse/kybd wouldn't work, even after enabling in Bios.
USB or PS2 worked fine on computer until Vista loaded, then locked.
ONLY resolution for me was to pull hd, install in another Dell, copy data,
and then wipe array and rebuild my computer. Hoping a clean build will
prevent problem that wiped successful running of Vista Ultimate for past 4
months.
Chris155 had excellent write-up... I sure hope Microsoft is reading what
they've done. I'm NOT real happy right now... and taxes have to be finished
by Tuesday!
Yes, I was just finishing mine when this happened. Sigh.
Good Luck, folks!

There seems to be a lot of talk about the vista update KB938371 and it knocking out your mouse etc. Has anyone found a solution as yet?

I am having the same problem. I didnot have a mouse after Windows updates. Uninstalled the updates and now I don't have a keyboard. Any help would be appreciated. Before uninstall system restore would not work and last known good boot was useless as is safe mode.

After my son inadvertently pushed the restart and install updates button (xp would change user now you must push the arrow at the end of the line)trying to get to his profile my computer hasn't been the same (No Mouse) .
Option number 3 worked like a charm for me ... outside of the Warning about Microsoft not being able to verify the driver it went PERFECTLY !!!
What a joke Microsoft can't verify it's own drivers !
THANK YOU VERY MUCH you saved me lotsa grief and aggravation .

I have similar problem to all. Running Vista Home Prem and able to
deal with all gliches, until Monday, when my mouse and keyboard
(wireless usb) both died. Tried usb mouse, ps2 keyboard, restoring to
much earlier date. Everything works in safe mode, but *no mouse or
keyboard of any kind* after Vista loads. At this point I'd like to
throw the damn thing out the window. Any suggestions gratefully
accepted.
