Post subject: Vista indexer eating up HDD space Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>file_management (more info?)
I have a 100GB partition that I keep Vista Ultimate x64 on with all my
installed programs. It normally only takes up roughly 40GB of the
100GB. Yesterday I got a hard drive full warning and I cleared restore
points to recover some space. Using WinDirStat I found that the folder
"C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Projects\SystemIndex\Indexer\CiFiles"
has 36GB worth of files all dated within the last 3 days. The big ones
are all .ci files. What are these and how can I get rid of them or at
least manage the size. Thanks.

Do you need to use the search function very often? Do you use it to
search inside of files for text strings?
If no... you might think about turning indexing off completely and
using a product called AgentRansack - a simple but good search utility
that's free.
I don't know if the size of the indexing files/folder can be managed
any other way.

While I don't know the answer to your specific question, I checked my folder
with the .ci files and it has only
52 MB, not GB. If it were me, I would go to Indexing Options| Advanced|
Rebuild, and rebuild my search index. If you stay off the keyboard and
mouse for about 30 minutes, it will rebuild in that time (if you keep using
the computer, it may take hours). I would also make sure that I am
indexing only the types of files that I really need (like avoiding encrypted
files, etc.). If you are still having the problem, try it again, and first
click on 'Restore Defaults'. Good luck.
