Is the controller not recognized or is the camera not recognized? My Sony
HDR-HC3 works fine via firewire on my Vista PC...

I have Windows Vista and a new camcorder (PV-GS90P-S) and it doesn't work
with bloody Vista. It works fine with XP. Actually, it worked once and I
restarted my computer and it stopped working. So it is not the cable, not the
IEEE port, not the camcorder and not me. Vista has done something to
inactivate the camcorder.

I knew I should have bought a Mac...next time I will.

That's strange - none of my firewire ports nor neither of my two video
cameras have had problems at all with Vista. The camera shouldn't be in
question here. If you turn off the computer and pull the plug from the wall
for ten seconds to *completely* shut down the computer, does the firewire
port wake up on next reconnect?

The cable and the camera would not be suspect to me. The hardware would
definitely be suspect given the data so far.

I've done all of the simple things like that....and none of it worked. I've
done all of the turn off this, unplug that, delete driver this, update driver
that.

The problem that people don't understand is that because Vista works for
your computer doesn't mean it will work on others. I am sure if I went
through the trouble of posting all of my devices and all of my drivers,
someone could tell me the problem. In truth who has time for doing that? So I
did what I should have done when I bought the computer and get rid of Windows
Vista and load Windows XP. I'm a big fan of XP as it is more stable and
wasn't the beta-version that Vista is. All of the software I spent so much
money on that didn't work in Vista works with XP - so I'm happy. Oh, and the
moment I trashed that beta-version of an OS my camcorder worked. Go figure...

I'm having the exact same problem. I kinda got screwed in my situation, I
work for a production company and said in a very cocky tone to my boss "Sure
yah no problem, I just bought me a new RIG with vista, I CAN EDIT YOUR VIDEOS
EASY!"

low and behold Vista will NOT detect any of my 3 cameras in any of my
firewire ports...Vista somehow managed to detect my external hard drive once
then POOF never again.

Fortunately I still had my old PC lying around so I was able to edit my
stuff on XP just fine, it just took too long =[.

I hope this issue can get fixed soon.

This isn't that Mike Ross is it? =)

What's the hardware information for this machine? Have you tried a
dedicated firewire card? I admit I use a dedicated 1394b firewire card for
the most part, but my Lian Li box's firewire ports work fine too.

Is this Vista RTM or Vista SP1 we're talking about?

I'm having the same problem ... works fine with Xp but won't even recognise
my Cam with Vista .... I'm not sure there's a fix unless Microsoft address it
.... it IS a Vista issue ... some comments I've seen say MS won't support Sony
format maybe thats a bit cynical (hope it isn't true .. maybe i'm being
naive) ... the thousands of posts with the same problem suggest this isn't a
hardware issue but a OS issue ... some manufacturers are now telling
customers that Vista WILL NOT WORK with firewire (ie Epson) ... I understand
MS want to protect there revenue..but I purchased Vista and it's only my own
video I want to save..whats the problem ! Sad ... I've always used MS products
but next time I purchase a pc i will be considering others!
